Guide to Sand & Cement Mortar

Choosing the Right Mortar for Your Project with Kirkhill Quarry Sand

When it comes to building and construction projects, the quality of mortar is just as important as the materials being joined. Mortar, a mixture of sand, cement, water, and sometimes lime or additives, serves as the glue that holds everything together.

At Kirkhill Quarry, located at Calcots Road, Elgin, IV30 5NZ, we’re proud to supply exceptionally high-quality sand that is unique to the North of Scotland.

This guide explores the various mortar mixes that can be created using Kirkhill Quarry’s 0/2mm Building Sand and 0/4mm Concrete Sands, their applications, and how to prepare them. You’ll also learn about other products we supply, including Dirty Sand, General Fill, Pea Gravel, and more.

What Does "Part" Mean in Mortar Mix Proportions?

When describing mortar mix ratios, a "part" refers to a unit of measurement that ensures consistent proportions of ingredients. A "part" could be any consistent volume or weight measurement, such as:

  • A bucketful
  • A shovel load
  • A specific weight in kilograms

For example, a 4:1 mix (sand:cement) means you need 4 parts sand for every 1 part cement. Using consistent parts ensures your mortar mix is accurate and delivers the desired strength, workability, and durability.

Detailed Mortar Mixes and Their Applications

1. Bricklaying Mortar

Bricklaying requires mortar that provides good adhesion, durability, and ease of use.

  • Mix Ratio: 4:1 (4 parts sand to 1 part cement) for general use; 3:1 for extra strength.
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/4mm coarse sand for better grip and strength.
  • Applications: House walls, garden walls, general masonry projects.
  • Tip: Ensure the mortar is workable but not too wet to maintain strength.

2. Pointing Mortar

Pointing involves filling gaps between bricks or stones to create a weatherproof seal.

  • Mix Ratio: 4:1 or 5:1 (sand:cement). Add lime for flexibility if needed.
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/2mm fine sand for a smooth finish.
  • Applications: Repointing brick walls, filling joints in stone masonry, chimney maintenance.
  • Tip: Use lime-based mortar for heritage or conservation projects.

3. External Rendering

Rendering provides weather resistance and a decorative finish for external walls.

  • Mix Ratio: 3.5:2 (sand:cement). Add lime for improved flexibility.
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/2mm fine sand for smooth application.
  • Applications: External walls of houses and outbuildings.
  • Tip: Apply in thin layers to prevent cracking.

4. Floor Screed

Floor screed is used to create a smooth, level surface for flooring.

  • Mix Ratio: 4:1 (sand:cement).
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/4mm coarse sand for a firm base.
  • Applications: Subfloors for homes or commercial spaces.
  • Tip: Ensure the mix is semi-dry—crumbly but cohesive.

5. Chimneys

Chimney mortar must withstand high temperatures and weather exposure.

  • Mix Ratio: 5:1 (sand:cement).
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/4mm coarse sand for durability.
  • Applications: Chimney construction and maintenance.

6. Paving Joints

Mortar for paving joints needs to be weather-resistant.

  • Mix Ratio: 3:1 (sand:cement).
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/2mm fine sand.
  • Applications: Patios, pathways, and driveways.

7. Retaining Walls

Retaining walls require strong mortar to handle weight and pressure.

  • Mix Ratio: 3:1 (sand:cement).
  • Kirkhill Sand Recommendation: Use 0/4mm coarse sand.
