Description

RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen – 40/60 Paving Grade Bitumen for Road & Asphalt Joint Sealing

Hot Pour Bitumen | 50 Pen Bitumen | 40/60 Penetration Grade | Bitumen Pitch | Asphalt Joint Sealer | Utility Reinstatement Bitumen

RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen is a professional-grade hot applied paving bitumen designed for road maintenance, asphalt reinstatement, utility works and civil engineering applications.

Commonly known within the highways industry as 50 pen bitumen, 40/60 bitumen, kegged bitumen, bitumen pitch, hot pour bitumen or hot tar, the product is heated before application to provide a durable bituminous seal to asphalt joints, reinstatement edges, ironwork and other interfaces within bituminous pavement construction.

RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen is particularly suited to contractors carrying out utility trench reinstatement, carriageway patching, asphalt repairs, manhole installations and general highway maintenance, where effective sealing of the joint between new and existing materials helps reduce water penetration and deterioration around the repair.

Manufactured as a paving-grade bitumen compliant with BS EN 12591:2009, it provides a proven bituminous binder for professional road construction and maintenance applications.

Typical Applications

RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen can be used for a wide range of highways, surfacing and civil engineering applications including:

  • Utility trench reinstatement

  • Asphalt reinstatement joint sealing

  • Vertical asphalt joint faces

  • Road and carriageway patch repairs

  • Footway reinstatement

  • Manhole installation and reinstatement

  • Gully and drainage ironwork installation

  • Sealing around manhole frames and covers

  • Kerb edge sealing

  • Asphalt-to-asphalt joints

  • New asphalt adjoining existing surfacing

  • Local authority highway repairs

  • Utility excavation repairs

  • Car park surfacing repairs

  • General road maintenance and civil engineering works

Designed for Asphalt & Utility Reinstatement

When an area of existing asphalt is excavated and reinstated, the interface between the new asphalt and existing pavement can become a vulnerable point within the repair.

Hot applied bitumen can be used to coat and seal prepared vertical faces before or during reinstatement, helping create a continuous bituminous interface between the existing pavement and the new material.

This makes RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen particularly useful for contractors completing:

Gas reinstatement works
Water utility reinstatements
Electricity cable trenches
Telecommunications trenches
Highway patching
Carriageway repairs
Manhole reinstatement
Drainage works
Road maintenance schemes

Why Seal Asphalt Joints?

Correct preparation and sealing of asphalt joints is an important part of producing durable pavement repairs.

Water entering poorly sealed interfaces can contribute to deterioration of the pavement structure, particularly where repeated traffic loading and freeze/thaw cycles are present.

Applying hot bitumen to the prepared joint interface provides a bituminous seal between existing and newly installed asphalt materials, helping protect the reinstatement perimeter from moisture ingress.

Key Benefits

Professional Paving Grade Bitumen

Suitable for use within professional highway maintenance, asphalt surfacing and civil engineering operations.

Excellent Adhesion to Bituminous Surfaces

When correctly heated and applied to properly prepared surfaces, the molten bitumen forms a strong bituminous coating to asphalt and compatible surfaces.

Helps Reduce Water Ingress

Creates a continuous bituminous seal around reinstatement joints and interfaces, helping reduce moisture penetration into vulnerable pavement edges.

Ideal for Utility Reinstatement

Particularly suited to trench reinstatement and patching operations carried out by utilities, highway contractors and surfacing companies.

Hot Applied

The material becomes fluid when heated, allowing it to be brushed, poured or otherwise applied to prepared surfaces using suitable hot-bitumen equipment.

Proven Highway Material

Penetration-grade bitumen has been widely used throughout the road construction and asphalt maintenance industry for decades.

What Does “50 Pen” Bitumen Mean?

The term 50 pen bitumen is commonly used within the highways and surfacing industry to describe a relatively hard paving-grade bitumen classified according to its penetration characteristics.

Penetration grading provides an indication of the consistency or hardness of the bitumen under defined laboratory conditions.

RSM Hot Pour R5 is supplied as a paving-grade bituminous material suitable for road maintenance and reinstatement applications.

It may also be searched for or specified as:

  • 50 Pen Bitumen

  • 40/60 Pen Bitumen

  • Penetration Grade Bitumen

  • Paving Grade Bitumen

  • Kegged Bitumen

  • Hot Pour Bitumen

  • Hot Applied Bitumen

  • Bitumen Pitch

  • Asphalt Joint Bitumen

  • Road Joint Sealant

  • Asphalt Edge Sealant

  • Trench Reinstatement Bitumen

  • Road Repair Bitumen

Standards

RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen is supplied as a paving-grade bitumen compliant with BS EN 12591:2009 – Bitumen and Bituminous Binders: Specifications for Paving Grade Bitumens.

BS EN 12591 provides the specification framework for paving-grade bitumens used within road construction, road maintenance, airfields and other paved areas.

The product can therefore form part of professional asphalt construction and highway reinstatement systems where an appropriate paving-grade bitumen is required.

Application

The bitumen must be heated using appropriate bitumen heating equipment until it reaches a suitable working consistency.

Once molten, the bitumen can be applied to clean and properly prepared surfaces using appropriate bitumen pouring cans, brushes or specialist application equipment.

For asphalt reinstatement joints, the prepared vertical joint face should be adequately coated before the adjoining asphalt material is installed.

Surfaces should be prepared appropriately and free from loose debris, excessive contamination or standing water before application.

Always follow the relevant project specification, method statement and current highway reinstatement requirements.

Heating & Handling

RSM Hot Pour R5 Pen Bitumen is a hot-applied product and must therefore be handled using suitable equipment and PPE.

The material should be heated carefully and must not exceed the manufacturer's stated maximum heating temperature of 200°C.

Suitable PPE should be worn during heating, handling and application, including:

  • Heat-resistant gauntlets

  • Face and eye protection

  • Protective workwear

  • Appropriate safety footwear

Operators should be trained and competent in handling hot bituminous materials.

Always consult the current Safety Data Sheet and Technical Data Sheet before use.
