Our EV Charging Range Expansion took place this week, introducing a range of exciting new products.

In this blog post, we’ll provide all the information you need to install these new products quickly, simply, and effectively. From key installation guidance to practical tips, we’ll help ensure you have everything you need to get started.

Application on Bituminous Substrates:

Surface Preparation:

• Ensure your application area is clean, dry and free of loose material, dust, grease and debris.
• Remove moisture using a gas burner, possibly scorching the substrate to release fresh bitumen binder and preheat the base.

Optional Primer Application:

• Where required, apply the appropriate SWARCO approved primer for the substrate in accordance with these product instructions.
• Allow primer to dry before proceeding and follow SWARCO HITEX guidelines for application thickness

Laying the Material:

• Place your thermoplastic on the preheated substrate with the aggregate side facing up.
• Ensure tight placement of pieces with no gaps between edges.

Heating the Material:

• Use a heat gun with at least three-bar pressure and a wide heat dispursion
• Move the torch evenly at about 30cm above the material, avoiding prolonged heating in one spot.
• Indicators of proper heating:
  • Material should melt and fuse evenly, with no visible joins.
  • Edges should taper onto the substrate
  • Heat until the material fully bonds to the substrate and the manufacturer’s visual indicators have been achieved.

Cooling and Curing:

• Allow the material to cool and harden for 5 – 10 minutes, depending on ambient temperature.
• Avoid using water to speed up curing, as this could affect adhesion.

Final Inspection:

• Check that the material is fully bonded around the entire perimeter.
• If the material lifts with no substrate attached, reapply heat until bonding occurs.
• If substrate is present on the lifted material, stop work and seek advice as it indicates an issue with the substrate’s integrity.

 

Application on Concrete & Other Substrates

Surface Preparation:

• Ensure the application area is clean, dry and free of loose material, dust, grease and debris.

Moisture Consideration:

• Concrete should be clean, dry and fully cured before installation.

Primer Application:

• Apply additional primer if the surface is very porous and allow it to fully dry before laying the material.

Application on New Concrete:

• Primer is recommended on concrete and other porous substrates in accordance with SWARCO installation guidance.
• Wait a minimum of 28 days before applying preformed materials on newly laid concrete to ensure proper drying and avoid application issues.

 

Following the correct preparation and application process is key to achieving a strong, durable finish. By ensuring the substrate is properly prepared and the material is heated and applied correctly, you can achieve the best possible results.
